CIRCA 1940’s US EDWARD STEICHEN-STYLE DOCKYARD DOCK WORKERS LOCKING DOWN SHIP’S CARGO SILVER PHOTOGRAPH – MEASURES 13″ x 10 3/8″ IN SIZE ON 11 1/4″ x 14 1/4″ PRINTED MOUNT: “A LIBERTY SHIP WAITS TO RECEIVE ITS CARGO OF…” This wonderful LARGE FOMAT silver image looks like it may have been shot by one of the photographer’s in Edward Steichen’s elite Naval Photography Department during the time of World War 11. Image in excellent condition measuring 13″ x 10 3/8″ on heavy grey paper mount measuring 11 1/4″ x 14 1/42″ in size. Mount has a wrinkle at upper right corner and lower left and a bump to upper left corner – plus a small 1/4″ tear at lower edge center of mount – not anything to be concerned about. Image in very good condition as shown. Photograph from large collection of similar photos that appear to have beencommissioned by U.S. Navy that came out of a photo album found in central Georgia nearMacon and the many military bases there – an album which, we are told once contained several hundred photographs that were dispersed over the years before we found theserecently. We are not saying that this image and the few others we will be offering are by EDWARD STEICHEN or his NAVAL AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIT – but the possibility remains that it MAY BE. Here’s some information about the Steichen group: During both WW 1 and WW II many American civilians set aside their successful professional careers to support the war efforts. Photographer Edward Steichen’s contributions reached far beyond his immediate area of expertise when he got involved late in his career – to join the Navy. But first he started with the Army during WW 1.By the time Steichen was given command of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit in 1941, he was 62 years old and was one who had accumulated a lifetime of achievements and accolades in the private sector professionally in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s and later as the commanding officer of the Army’s photographic division of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI. Beginning in 1917, he would serve 16 months in that post and be awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel (with a citation by Gen. John J. Pershing) and was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. As it came to be, it was just the beginning of “Steichen’s Boys’” impact on the very future of America. The Steichen group of assembled photographer’s photographic record of Naval Aviation’s combat heroism would become one of the most powerful American weapons the Japanese war machine would have to face during the course of WWII.
