Up for auction is a complete folder/pamphlet issued by the CUSHMAN’S BAKERY of Lynn Massachusetts. On the back page of the pamphlet is a complete uncut Airplane Card from the series of forty entitled AIRPLANES OF AMERICA. The series is listed in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue as series D2, The card features a beautifully illustrated Image of the airplane done by the artist Fred J. Hoertz . Although I call this a card it is actually printed on paper stock rather than cardboard. The pamphlet itself was issued by the Bakery with details and advertising for their products, a different one each week. The cards printed on the back were meant to be cut out and pasted into a special Album that you could get from the Bakery. As you can imagine finding the full uncut bulletin with the airplane card not cut out, like this one is rare. The full pamphlet measures 4 3/8 inches by 7 inches approximately when folded . This pamphlet was issued during 1941, and features a BRANIFF AIRWAYS SUPER B LINER. The BULLETIN does have some lighter wrinkles or bends, and a smaller corner crease. It is fully intact and features very bright color . I think it displays nicely. I have scanned the front and back pages of the pamphlet and opened up fully, fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself. This is a scarce series. Bread cards are one of the last properly cataloged frontiers of card collecting. With such fantastic art work (in many cases done by well know American commercial artist and illustrators) , diversity of series, and the fact that they are scarce, bread cards are a great collectable that are bound to increase in popularity as time goes on. I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities and Circus themes, military and war cards and many more.
