HATTIE CARNEGIE Hattie Carnegie (1889-1956) was a legendary fashion and jewelry designer and entrepreneur based in New York City from the 1920s to the 1950s. Born to a poor Jewish family of seven children in Vienna, Austria, as Henrietta Kanengeiser. Then, when she was a young girl, her family immigrated to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. After her father, a tailor, died in 1902, Carnegie, who had been attending a public school, dropped out of school at the age of 13 and became a messenger at Macy’s Department Store. When she was 15, she became a hat model for a millinery manufacturer. In her early 20s, Carnegie changed her last name to Carnegie after Andrew Carnegie, who at the time was the richest man in the United States, in order to appear wealthier and more culturally acceptable. Carnegie and a seamstress friend, Rose Roth, opened a hat-designing and hat-making business in New York 1909 called Carnegie– Ladies Hatter. After the aspiring entrepreneur bought out her friend and became sole owner of what was called “Hattie Carnegie,” she began traveling to Paris up to 7 times a year to buy original dresses by Chanel, Dior, and other Couture French designers. By 1925, Carnegie was such a success that she bought a building right off Park Avenue where she started to feature even more new versions of her “Carnegie Look” for American women. Sales of the business were over $3.5 million a year. Carnegie with her great knack for recognizing fashion talent helped discover some of the outstanding designers of that era. “The Little Carnegie Suit” was her brand’s calling card. It consisted of a simple fitted skirt and jacket with a fitted waist. The Hattie Carnegie designs were produced in Carnegie’s own factories. Eventually her company featured suits, dresses, and evening gowns, hats, jewelry, lingerie, cosmetics, perfumes, and accessories. Carnegie is well-known for pioneering the “small head to hem” boutique concept. Although Carnegie could not sew or “cut a pattern,” she hired many gifted designers including Norman Norell, James Galonos, Jean-Louis, Claire McCardel, Travis Banton, Pauline Fairfax Potter, and Ward Bennett. Carnegie’s most outstanding achievement was that she was the first custom designer to create a special wholesale collection to department stores. I. Magnin was the first store to buy Hattie Carnegie’s original designs wholesale, and thet featured both the Hattie Carnegie label and the I.Magnin label. Her contract allowed Carnegie to open stores in Macy’s selling the designs created in her own factories. Her one-of-a-kind originals attracted New York socialites and Hollywood stars. Her clients included the Duchess of Windsor, Mrs. Randolph Hearst, Clare Boothe Luce, Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Fontaine, Joan Crawford, Gertrude Lawrence, Norma Shearer, Barbara Hutton, and Constance Bennett. In 1948, Hattie received the highly esteemed Coty American Fashion Critics Award. She not only designed clothes for her clients but also designed uniforms for the Women’s United States Army (WAC) during the Korean war, which were adopted for wear from 1951 until 1968. For this outstanding achievement and other charitable works, Carnegie received the prestigious Congressional Medal of Freedom. Hattie Carnegie jewelry was made from 1939 to 1979. Her major designers were Pauline Trigare, Peggy Noonan and Nadine Effront. It often used special themes such as her Oriental group, her Egyptian Revival group, her beaded fruits, leaves, and flowers, her poured glass pieces, and her figural pieces. Her creative, wearable, and distinctive jewelry is prized, valued, and quite collectible today. Her earliest jewelry was marked with the “HC” mark. Hattie Carnegie jewelry marks included “HC” in a diamond inside a semi-oval, “Hattie Carnegie” inscript on a cartouche, “Carnegie” inscript, and “Ms.Hattie”. Carnegie’s jewelry features bold, colorful necklaces, earrings, brooches, and bracelets When Hattie Carnegie died in 1956, her business was worth almost 8 million dollars. Hattie once said, “To show the American woman herself off to best advantage – that has always been my aim and that is my real biography.” THE SUNFLOWER ~ Mythology, History, Cultural Significance and Symbolism The sunflower’s name was derived from its tendency to turn towards the sun — heliotropism. The scientific name for the sunflower is Helianthus Annuus, meaning “flower of the sun.” Different cultures around the world have different meanings for the sunflower ranging from positivity, focus, warmth, happiness, strength, admiration, loyalty, congratulations, and peace. In China, sunflowers are symbolic of good fortune, vitality, intelligence, and happiness. They are worshipped as symbols of faithfulness because of their faithful dedication to the sun. Throughout the world, they are frequently given at graduations and at openings of new businesses as well as to wish people Happy New Year. One of the sunflower’s blossoms called a “head” is made up of numerous individual flowers instead of a single flower and is called an inflorescence. The outer yellow petals are called Ray flowers, and the center is composed of multiple flowers crowded together. Sunflowers originated in the Americas. They were first domesticated in what is now Mexico and the southern United States. Sunflower seeds have been found in Mexico from as far back as 2200 BC. Native Americans grew sunflower crops from Mexico all the way to south Canada. Explorers in the 6th Century brought them back to Europe where they made their way to Russia and were cultivated for sunflower oil. In North America, Russia reintroduced this process in the mid 20th century causing the commercial use and breeding of sunflower seed oil. In Victorian England, flower symbolism was a popular pastime. For the Victorians, sunflowers symbolized gratitude. In Greek mythology, the ancient Greeks thought the reason the sunflowers turned toward to the sun beautiful water nymph, Clytie’s adoration of Apollo, the Greek God of the Sun. In her love for Apollo, Clytie would sit on the Earth gazing at the sun (Apollo), moving in his chariot day after day. Unfortunately, Apollo stopped loving her when he fell in love with another nymph named Leucothoe. Clytie told Leucothoe’s father about Apollo’s relationship with his daughter because of her jealousy, and he buried her alive. Angry at Clytie, Apollo turned her into her sunflower. Various religions consider sunflowers as symbols of worship and faithfulness because of the sunflower’s faithful dedication to the sun. The flowers’ golden blossoms and petals have expanded the flower’s meaning to the idea of spiritual knowledge and a worshipper’s seeking of spiritual truths. In 1532, the explorer Francisco Pizarro discovered giant sunflowers on the robes of Incan priestesses. They were wearing sunflower crowns, as well. In Inca mythology, the sunflower was considered sacred to the people, and for the Incas, the sunflower represented the image of Infi, the Sun God. In ancient temples of the Andes, images of sunflowers have also been discovered. To native Americans, sunflowers represented bounty and provision because they provided edible seeds, dye pigment, and more, including building materials and medical usage. Sunflowers were included in spiritual rituals, including the Sun dance. Archaeologists suggest that Native Americans were using sunflowers as early as 3,000 BC, and for food and livestock. Throughout the centuries, sunflowers have been a boundless source of inspiration for poets, painters, jewelry designers, and other creative artists. One particularly notable example is the legendary Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh, whose paintings of sunflowers have become so iconic that they have inspired sunflower greeting card collections, posters, mugs, and other similar sunflower-themed memorabilia. In their captivating 2019-2020 Spring/Summer Collection, the luxury Italian high fashion design house, Dolce & Gabbana, turned to the SUNFLOWER as their inspiration for dresses, pants, and accessories-including shoes and handbags – all of which were embellished by sublime sunflowers. The sunflower continues to inspire designers of both fine and fashion jewelry. Tiffany’s & Co. has crafted a variety of magnificent sunflower-themed jewelry, including pieces in sterling silver as well as in platinum and diamonds. And in the 1950s, designers at the illustrious jewelry company, Harry Winston, created the “Sunflower Collection.” The pieces in this collection feature an iconic design with a floral, sunflower-inspired motif with diamonds and precious jewels such as rubies and sapphires. From the perspective of aesthetic beauty as well as spiritual inspiration, there is not a more exemplary model than the incomparable SUNFLOWER. Author Helen Keller once expressed the lessons we, as humans, can learn from the resilient and optimistic sunflower : “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do.” In a world that often seems fraught with sorrow and overwhelmed by negativity, learning to focus on the positive aspects of life can be difficult. Yet, when reflecting upon the innate strength and persevering positivity of the sunflower, it seems within our reach.
