RARE Antique Knowles Taylor Knowles Small Vase Brush Jar White & Gold with Brown Transfer-ware Floral – Made to look like Homer Laughlin’s Superba or Mingo Brush Jar Antique Knowles, Taylor, Knowles White Ironstone Semi-Vitreous Porcelain with Elegant Gold Trim Line and Brown Floral Transferware – Small Vase / Brush Jar – this is early toilet ware that mimicked other potters of the time including TST and Homer Laughlin – this piece would make a beautiful vase or home decor piece! Perfect for the collector of antique KTK pottery, or to be used as a holder for makeup brushes, toothbrushes, shaving brushes, paint brushes, etc! Decorative and reusing something made over 100 years ago, how fun! Since this is similar to HLC’s Superba or Mingo shape, this would make beautiful table centerpiece to hold flowers for your next celebration, birthday party, engagement party, bridal shower, or just because day! Knowles, Taylor & Knowles (KT&K) was a pottery company in East Liverpool, Ohio from 1854 to 1931. The original owners were: Issac Knowles, John Taylor, (Issac’s son-in-law) and Homer Knowles (Issac’s son). The pottery produced all types of wares from yellow ware, ironstone, and semi-vitreous dinnerware, but it is best known for the light-weight, translucent Lotus Ware. Produced mainly in the 1890s, Lotus was meant to compete with the successfull Belleek porcelain made in Ireland. High cost and breakage forced K&TK to halt production of Lotus. KT&K is not to be confused with Knowles China of Newell, WV. Even though Edwin M. Knowles of Knowles China was the son of Issac, the two companies operated independently of each other. In 1929, KT&K merged with several other potteries to form the American China Corporation, but the company folded due to the Great Depression. Antique toilet ware took off in the 1880s. Sets were made for the home as well as for use in hospitals and hotels. A standard set for the home was made up of: a chamber pot – usually a one handled bowl with a lid, a slop jar – larger than a chamber pot with handles on either side, a combinet – similar to a slop jar, but with a wire handle, a covered soap dish – often with a circular insert, shaving mug, brush jar, two sizes of ewers, and a basin. Condition: Very good antique condition overall – no chips and subtle under the glaze crazing, which is typical to find on antique pottery. Has a couple either very small cracks or just age staining along the inside rim – small, but noted for accuracy. Some light wear on the gold trim line from use and handling – little to no wear on floral decal. Piece may have other small factory production imperfections such as sand bumps, glaze skips, glaze pops, etc – all part of factory production. Little to no issues with this piece.
