eBay Faulkner, William – Mosquitoes – Boni & Liveright: New York, 1927 – First Edition / First Printing – No statement of edition or mention of later printings present on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. “The trouble with modern verse is, that to comprehend it you must have recently passed through an emotional experience identical with that through which the poet himself has recently passed. The poetry of modern poets is like a pair of shoes that only those whose feet are shaped like the cobbler’s feet, can wear; while the old boys turned out shoes that anybody who can walk at all can wear.” The book has rubbing to the edges, stains and smudging, soiling, and general shelf wear. The boards remain mostly straight, the binding is square but is cracked and split at the end pages. Internally this copy has some light tanning and a few smudges but is otherwise clean with no writing or markings. A serviceable example of this scarce book. An unusual work for Faulkner as it is set in New Orleans and not his native Mississippi as the vast majority of his novels were. That likely has to do with the fact that it was only his second novel and he was still finding his place as the voice of Mississippi literature. One of only 3,047 copies of the first edition printed.
